Granite is an igneous rock — the most common one found on Earth — and it appears throughout daily life in countertops, floors and monuments. The red, green, grey, pink and white lines running through granite come from its mineral composition, visible across the whole surface of the rock.
Based on their mineral make-up and the colours those minerals produce, granites fall into these main types:
A milky white made of quartz and feldspar. Slight black spots come from a lack of amphibole grain; otherwise it stays a clean, near-pure white — popular for bright kitchens and light interiors.
The most requested granite colour, containing at least 20% quartz. Not every black rock is granite, which is part of what makes true black granite a premium, sought-after choice.
With roughly equal parts quartz and feldspar, this shining, smooth black-and-white combination is a favourite for kitchen countertops.
An abundance of potassium feldspar gives this granite its pink tone. Its distinctive colour makes it a popular pick for shelves, countertops and feature surfaces.
