Onyx is often grouped with marble, but geologically it is a banded variety of calcite formed in mineral springs and caves. Two qualities set it apart. First, its translucency — thin slabs let light pass through, which is why designers backlight it. Second, its dramatic veining — each slab is unique, and because onyx is book-matched (two slabs mirrored side by side), the patterns can be arranged into large symmetrical panels. Also called Lady Onyx, this variety shows pink and green veins over a soft white base. Designers use it where a gentle, decorative accent is wanted — powder rooms, dressing areas and boutique retail.
Rich green tones with a smooth, luxurious appearance. It has comparatively low water absorption, so it holds up better than most onyx in semi-outdoor and high-humidity settings when properly sealed.
Dramatic and exclusive, black onyx suits high-end, low-light spaces. It is commonly specified for bar tops, cladding and sink surrounds where a bold, moody finish is the aim.
The single most requested use of onyx is the backlit wall or counter, and it is where quality really matters. For an even glow, slabs are cut thin (around 10–20 mm), reinforced with a fibreglass backing, and lit with a diffused LED panel — not point lights, which create hot spots. We supply onyx selected specifically for translucency so the veining reads clearly when lit. If you are planning a backlit feature, tell us at the enquiry stage so we can pick blocks that transmit light well; not every slab is suited to it.
